[ARCHIVED] Utility Billing Scam Calls

Westerly Water Department was recently notified that an individual, posing as a Water Department employee, has been calling demanding money.

Calls demanding immediate, large payments to avoid service shut-off, especially in the form of a prepaid card, often signal a scam. The Westerly Water Department would never demand money over the phone.

Also keep in mind that criminals now use a tactic called "spoofing" to imitate local phone numbers.

If this happens to you, hang up and call the phone number on your utility bill with any questions.

Never provide payment or personal information over the phone.
