UPDATE TO THE VETERANS ‘ROLLS OF HONOR’ (PLAQUES) AT THE WESTERLY WORLD WAR MEMORIAL
The Veterans ‘Rolls of Honor’ Memorial Committee, with the Town of Westerly, are seeking names of eligible veterans to update the Rolls of Honor plaques at the Memorial located at the corner of Wilcox Park and the 3-way intersection of Broad Street, Grove Avenue, and Granite Street. Instructions and criteria are provided below.
The veteran must meet all the following eligibility criteria:
a. Served on active duty in the U.S. uniformed military during one or more of the war periods listed below. If a veteran served in more than one war, then that veteran’s name will be included on each applicable roll of honor (plaque).b. Be discharged from the military under other than dishonorable conditions; or be serving honorably. Descendants and Gold Star families may represent veterans.c. Be a lifelong resident of Westerly; or was a permanent resident of Westerly upon entry to the military, during the war, or directly after discharge.d. Provide a copy of DD Form 214 (not the original) by July 15 2021 to the Town Manager’s Office, Town Hall, 45 Broad St, Westerly RI 02891.
*If additional time is needed to obtain a DD Form 214, please inform the town manager’s office in writing. Others may submit documents on behalf of veterans. To obtain a copy of a lost DD Form 214, one may complete an online request for Veterans Service Records at archives.gov or call The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration at 1-866-272-6272 for assistance.
The veteran must have served any time during the following dates (taken from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website, regarding wartime eligibility):
a. World War I. 6 April 1917 to 11 November 1918.b. World War II. 7 December 1941 to 31 December 1946.c. Korean [War] conflict. 27 June 1950 to 31 January 1955.d. Vietnam War era. 5 August 1964 to 7 May1975; or, beginning 28 February 1961 if the veteran was serving in the Republic of Vietnam.e. Gulf War. 2 August 1990 to a future date set by law or presidential proclamation.
